ABOUT THE CROATIAN NATIONAL BANK BUILDING
![]() |
| The Croatian National Bank is headquartered in the palace of the former Zagreb Stock Exchange that was erected in 1927. The palace is the most important work of Viktor Kovačić, a progenitor of modern Croatian architecture, and it is a world heritage site entered into the Register of Cultural Monuments. The palace of the former Stock Exchange has three fronts. The main 19-meters-long front is marked by a porch with four ionic columns contributing to the monumentality of both the building and the square in front of it. All fronts are made of white stone from Brač. Owing to the death of architect Kovačić, the decoration and refurbishment of the interior was finished, according to the author's original idea, by his longtime associate Hugo Erlich. | |

Round Room,
Mezzanine
The main stock exchange auditorium is a circular room 21 meter in diameter, topped by a monumental paneled cupola. The room has no windows, but is illuminated through a large, 8 meters wide, circular opening at the top of the cupola. The opening is covered by a glass pyramidal roof. The cupola rests on 16 concrete pillars. In fact, the room has two cupolas: an internal and an external cupola. The external cupola functions as a roof, while the external one has an ornamental character. The air between the two cupolas provides for thermal insulation (protects the interior from heat in summer or cold in winter). Both cupolas are made of reinforced concrete. Polished plasters are applied to the walls, producing the effect of the stucco lustro finish. The walls represent a first-class work of decorative arts and are an excellent imitation of marble. The auditorium was once equipped with 52 telephone booths for visitors, which made the Zagreb Stock Exchange the most modern European stock exchange of that time. It also had its own internal telephone exchange, so it was possible to make calls from all booths concurrently. That was very important for a successful and fast performance of the stock exchange operations. Today, the auditorium serves as the library and conference room. |
