The Croatian National Bank, in cooperation with the Croatian Monetary Institute, issued a gold and silver coin commemorating the 75th birthday of Dr Franjo Tuđman, the first President of the Republic of Croatia, under whose guidance Croatia was established as an independent and internationally recognised state, a centuries-old dream of the Croatian people.
Minted in proof quality, the coins were released for sale on 14 May 1997.

The Decision on the issue and sale of commemorative gold and silver coins "First President of the Republic of Croatia Dr Franjo Tuđman" was published in the Official Gazette No. 49/1997, 34/2010, 120/2010, 128/2012, 121/2016 and 109/2017.
The design of the gold and silver coins is by the sculptor Kažimir Hraste.
This issue was minted by the Croatian Mint.
The Croatian National Bank has contractually agreed to undertake the promotion and sale of this issue with the Croatian Mint.
