European Statistics Day at CNB

Published: 21/10/2026

How are interest rates on loans and savings changing? How much are households and businesses borrowing? How much is the revenue from foreign tourists? Statistical data from the Croatian National Bank (CNB) help answer these questions and understand changes that affect citizens and the economy on a daily basis. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the European Statistics Day (October 20, 2026), under the motto ‘European statistics at a crossroads: priorities, opportunities and constraints’, the CNB highlights the importance of reliable and accessible data for making informed decisions in a dynamic economic environment.

The CNB is one of the official statistics producers in Croatia and part of the European System of Central Banks (ESCB), compiling and processing data and publishing monetary and financial statistics as well as external statistics. In addition to reports from banks, other financial institutions and businesses, as well as statistical surveys, it also uses administrative sources, such as registers, to supplement and link the data. The CNB carries out its statistical activities in accordance with the national multi-annual Programme of Statistical Activities of the Republic of Croatia and Annual Implementation Plans and international requirements[1].

Trust in statistics rests on professional independence, impartiality, the protection of confidential data and equal access to releases for all users. These are some of the principles of the Public commitment on European Statistics by the ESCB. Common international statistical standards enable the full comparability of Croatian data with identical indicators of other states. New data sources and digitalisation open up opportunities for higher-quality and more timely statistics, while preserving confidentiality and limiting reporting burden.

On CNB’s website users can track the movement and structure of interest rates, deposits and loans, payment transactions, financial assets and liabilities of all sectors, general government debt, Croatia’s external economic relations and additional statistics on securities, payment systems and services, cash and the turnover of authorised exchange offices. These data help citizens understand financial movements, business plan their operations, and public institutions shape and monitor the impact of economic and social policies. For this purpose, information on the planned releases of specific data is published regularly during the calendar year.

At the end of 2025, it had 52 employees, of whom 36 were women and 16 were men. Their work includes the collection and verification of data, the application of statistical methods, and the preparation and publication of statistical indicators available to the public.

Behind each economic forecast, investment plan or economic policy measure lie comprehensive and expertly processed statistical data. Reliable statistics helps us understand change, verify claims and make informed decisions. Therefore, it is important for data to be accessible and understandable to everyone. The CNB remains committed to the continuous development of statical methods, the digitalisation of processes and the protection of data confidentiality, thereby directly contributing to strengthening confidence in the financial and economic system of the Republic of Croatia.
