The tables on infrastructure include data on the number of operating units, automatic teller machines (ATMs), electronic funds transfer at point of sale (EFTPOS) terminals, day/night deposit boxes, coin deposit machines, payment order accepting machines and cash withdrawal terminals.

Table PI1 Total operating units and accepting devices in the territory of the Republic of Croatia

Data presented in this report have been collected on the basis of the Decision on the obligation to submit payment and electronic money statistics (Official Gazette 147/2013 and 16/2017) and the accompanying Instructions.

This report presents data on the total number of operating units of institutions having their head office in the Republic of Croatia, which are:

  • credit institutions,
  • payment institutions,
  • electronic money institutions,
  • a branch of third-country credit institutions,
  • branches of a third-country electronic money institution,
  • branches of a credit institution from a Member State,
  • branches of an electronic money institution from a Member State,
  • branches of payment institutions from a Member State,

and data on the total number of accepting devices.

The total number of accepting devices in the territory of the Republic of Croatia on the last calendar day of the reporting month is shown through the total number of ATMs, EFTPOS terminals, day/night deposit boxes, cash deposit terminals, payment order accepting machines and cash withdrawal terminals.

The number of ATMs and EFTPOS terminals is shown as the total number of devices at which reporting entities, in accordance with the Decision, carry out the payment services of acquiring payment instruments in terms of Article 4 sub-paragraph 5 of the Payment System Act (Official Gazette 66/2018 and 114/2022).

DEFINITIONS AND DESCRIPTIONS

  1. Operating unit

The operating unit is any organisational segment of a credit institution, payment institution and an electronic money institution that offers payment services to payment service users (branch, branch office, sub-branch, office, etc.). The head office is counted in an operating unit if it is offering payment services to payment service users. The operating unit of an electronic money institution that also carries out the activity of telecommunication services is every organisational segment that provides the users with the execution of payment services.

Data are presented as the total number of operating units in the territory of the Republic of Croatia in the reporting month.

  1. ATM

The ATM is an electronic terminal that enables cash withdrawal and/or deposit, money remittance, the use of the service of providing information on the balance on the transaction account and other services to the users of payment instruments.

Data are presented as the total number of active ATMs at which reporting entities submit data pursuant to the Decision on carrying out of the payment service of acquiring of payment instruments in terms of Article 3 sub-paragraph 5 of the Payment System Act (Official Gazette 66/2018 and 114/2022) in the territory of the Republic of Croatia in the reporting month.

  1. EFTPOS terminal

The EFTPOS terminal is the terminal that enables the use of payment instruments at a point of sale, so that information on payments are taken over and recorded manually on paper slips or electronically.

The presentation of data is given as the total number of active EFTPOS terminals at which reporting entities submit data pursuant to the Decision on carrying out of the payment service of acquiring of payment instruments in terms of Article 3 sub-paragraph 5 of the Payment System Act (Official Gazette 66/2022 and 114/2022) in the territory of the Republic of Croatia in the reporting month.

  1. Day/night deposit box

The day/night deposit box is a self-service device used for cash deposits for further processing and depositing to the payment account.

Data are presented as the total number of active day/night deposit boxes in the territory of the Republic of Croatia in the reporting month.

  1. Coin deposit machine

The coin deposit machine is a self-service device that enables the payment service user to deposit coins to his/her payment account and other "accounts".

Data are presented as the total number of active coin deposit machines in the territory of the Republic of Croatia in the reporting month.

  1.  Payment order accepting machine

The payment order accepting machine is a self-service device that enables the payment service user to submit a paper-based payment order that the payment service provider will execute according to the terms of the contract.

Data are presented as the total number of payment order accepting machines in the territory of the Republic of Croatia in the reporting month.

  1. Cash withdrawal terminal

The cash withdrawal terminal is the EFTPOS terminal that permits the user of payment services to use only the service of cash withdrawal and deposit. The payment transaction of cash withdrawal and deposit is most frequently authorised by a PIN/signature. 

Data are presented as the total number of active cash withdrawal terminals in the territory of the Republic of Croatia in the reporting month.

Data presented in this report are collected on the basis of the Decision on the obligation to submit payment and electronic money statistics (Official Gazette 147/2013 and 16/2017) and the accompanying Instructions.

This report presents the data in the reporting month about the number of operating units and the number of accepting devices in the territory of the Republic of Croatia, by territorial distribution and by counties in the Republic of Croatia.

The number of operating units refers to the institutions having their head office in the Republic of Croatia, which are:

  • credit institutions,
  • payment institutions,
  • electronic money institutions,
  • a branch of third-country credit institutions,
  • branches of a third-country electronic money institution,
  • branches of a credit institution from a Member State,
  • branches of an electronic money institution from a Member State,
  • branches of payment institutions from a Member State.

The number of accepting devices is presented through the number of day/night deposit boxes, payment order accepting machines, coin deposit machines and ATMs.

The number of ATMs is shown as the total number of ATMs at which the above institutions carry out the payment services of acquiring payment instruments in terms of Art. 4 sub-paragraph 5 of the Payment System Act (Official Gazette 66/2018 and 114/2022).

This report gives insight into the total number of active devices in the territory of the Republic of Croatia in the reporting month classified by county and the total number of operating units classified by county.

The payment order accepting machine is a self-service device that enables the payment service user to submit a paper-based payment order that the payment service provider will execute according to the terms of the contract (including automatic payment machines).

Data are presented as the total number of active payment order accepting machines in the territory of the Republic of Croatia in the reporting month by county.

  1. Coin deposit machine

The coin deposit machine is a self-service device that enables the payment service user to deposit coins to his/her payment account and other "accounts".

Data are presented as the total number of active coin deposit machines in the territory of the Republic of Croatia in the reporting month by county.

  1. ATM

The ATM is an electromechanical device that permits the users of payment instruments to withdraw and/or deposit cash, remit funds, use the service of providing information on the balance in the transaction account and other services

Data are presented as the total number of active ATMs at which reporting entities submit data pursuant to the Decision on carrying out of the payment service of acquiring of payment instruments in terms of Article 4 sub-paragraph 5 of the Payment System Act (Official Gazette 66/2018 and 114/2022) in the territory of the Republic of Croatia in the reporting month classified by county.

The number of ATMs and EFTPOS terminals is shown as the total number of terminals at which reporting entities, in accordance with the Decision, carry out the payment services of acquiring of payment instruments in terms of Article 4, item 5 of the Payment System Act (Official Gazette 66/2018 and 114/2022).

DEFINITIONS AND DESCRIPTIONS

  1. ATM

The ATM is an electromechanical device that allows the users of payment instruments to withdraw and/or deposit cash, transfer funds, to make balance enquiries regarding the balance in the transaction account and other services.

Data are presented as the total number of active ATMs at which reporting entities submit data pursuant to the Decision on carrying out of the payment service of acquiring of payment instruments in terms of Article 3, item 5 of the Payment System Act (Official Gazette 66/2018 and 114/2022) in the territory of the Republic of Croatia in the reporting month.

An ATM can be recorded in several features.

  1. EFTPOS terminal

The EFTPOS terminal is the terminal that enables the use of payment instruments at a point of sale, so that information on payments is taken over and recorded manually on paper slips or electronically.

Data are presented as the total number of active EFTPOS terminals at which reporting entities submit data pursuant to the Decision on carrying out of the payment service of acquiring of payment instruments in terms of Article 3, item 5 of the Payment System Act (Official Gazette 66/2018 and 114/2022) in the territory of the Republic of Croatia in the reporting month.

  1. Contactless

Terminals that support the acquiring of payment instruments that contain only the record based on the contactless chip are shown within the feature of the terminal 'Contactless'. When a terminal is a contactless-contact terminal, it is not shown in the category, i.e., line 'Contactless'.

  1. Contact

Terminals that support the acquiring of payment instruments that contain only the record based on a magnetic stripe and/or chip are shown within the feature of the terminal 'Contact'.

When a terminal is a contactless-contact terminal, it is not shown in the category, i.e., line 'Contact'.

  1.  Contactless – contact

Terminals that support the acquiring of payment instruments of a different recording (magnetic stripe, chip, contactless chip, etc.) are shown within the feature of the terminal 'Contactless-contact'.

When a terminal is contactless-contact, then the terminal is not shown in the category, i.e., line 'Contactless' and 'Contact'.

  1. Drive-in

ATMs that can be accessed from a means of transport (e.g. car) and perform payment transactions are shown within the feature of the terminal 'Drive-in'.

  1. With video surveillance

ATMs that are in the video surveillance system are shown within the feature of the terminal 'With video surveillance'.

  1. In secure location

ATMs that are located in a special, enclosed area for that purpose and physical access is ensured by applying the adequate measures of physical and/or technical protection (e.g. ATMs in operating units, ATMs in a special area which can be accessed using the payment card, etc.) are shown within the feature of the terminal 'In secure location'.

A single ATM/EFTPOS terminal may be included in only one category, i.e., it may be a contactless, contact or contactless-contact terminal.

Each of the ATMs may at the same time be a drive-in and/or with video surveillance and/or in a secure location.

The line 'Total ATM' represents the sum of data shown in lines according to feature, i.e. contactless, contact and contactless-contact.
