The European Council has appointed the Governor of the Croatian National Bank, Boris Vujčić, to the position of Vice‑President of the European Central Bank (ECB). The Governor will assume his new duties on 1 June 2026, upon the completion of the term of the current Vice‑President, Luis de Guindos.
On the occasion of his appointment, the Governor of the Croatian National Bank stated:
"I am proud to be appointed Vice‑President of the European Central Bank, after receiving full support from all key European institutions throughout this process. It is a great honour, which must be embraced with an equally great sense of responsibility. I am confident that I will collaborate successfully and devotedly with all members of the ECB Executive Board, as well as with the ECB President Christine Lagarde. We will continue to make decisions within the ECB Governing Council with the aim of preserving price stability, strengthening the resilience of the financial system, and maintaining public confidence in the euro throughout the euro area.
This decision is also a recognition of the long‑standing work of the Croatian National Bank, the successful introduction of the euro in Croatia, and our country’s contribution to the functioning of the euro area. I will continue to responsibly perform my duties as Governor of the CNB until I take up my new position, and I would once again like to extend my sincere gratitude to all CNB employees for their dedicated work and effort to date. This is, I repeat, their great achievement as well."
Boris Vujčić is the first person from Central and Eastern Europe to hold a position on the ECB Executive Board since the establishment of this institution more than 25 years ago.
The appointment procedure was carried out in accordance with Article 283(2) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.
