The Croatian National Bank will on 21 September 2026 release into circulation the commemorative 2-euro coin “City of Vukovar”. The exchange of the commemorative coins for the public will begin on 9 November 2026.
The commemorative coin “City of Vukovar” is issued as part of the “Croatian Cities” series and features the commemorative motifs of the Vukovar Water Tower and the Danube River, which represent Vukovar as a city of particular historical, cultural and symbolic significance to the Republic of Croatia. The City of Vukovar was also represented on a 20 kuna banknote featuring the Eltz Castle.
Date of release into circulation: The commemorative coin is released into circulation on 21 September 2026. The exchange of the commemorative coins for the public will begin on 9 November 2026.
Technical specification: The commemorative 2-euro coin is minted according to the technical specifications for the 2-euro circulation coin in accordance with Council Regulation (EU) No 729/2014 of 24 June 2014 on denominations and technical specifications of euro coins intended for circulation.
Description of the national side of the commemorative coin: The national side of the commemorative coin features two main motifs that form the identity of the City of Vukovar: the Vukovar Water Tower with the Croatian flag at the top, a symbol of the city, its resistance, defence and endurance, and the Danube River, the lifeblood of the city and a thing of natural beauty that shapes its spatial identity. Their harmonious relationship sends a clear message about Vukovar as a place of unity and patriotism. The coin also bears the inscriptions: “GRAD VUKOVAR”, “HRVATSKA” and the year of issuance “2026.”. The design of the national side of the commemorative coin also includes the designer’s stylised initials: “MD”.
The outer ring of the commemorative coin’s national side bears the 12 stars of the European flag.
The edge lettering of the commemorative coin features, in italic, the text “O LIJEPA O DRAGA O SLATKA SLOBODO” (Oh beautiful, oh dear, oh sweet freedom) from the Hymn to Freedom, which is an integral part of the pastoral play “Dubravka” by the 17th century Croatian writer Ivan Gundulić.
